March 22, 2001 - New Self-Checkout Lanes at Redner's Warehouse Markets Offering Added Convenience for Shoppers

Warrington, Pennsylvania - Customers of Redner's Warehouse Markets on Route 611 & Almshouse Rd. in Warrington now have the option to scan, bag and pay for their purchases without cashier assistance, using one of the new self-checkout lanes installed in the store on Thursday, March 15, 2001.

"We expect an enthusiastic reaction from out customers," said Kevin Snyder, Senior Vice President of Store Operations, Redner's Warehouse Markets. "It gives them an easy-to-use option for checking out, one that can help them complete their shopping trip more quickly."

Redner's Warehouse Markets, among Pennsylvania's largest and fastest growing supermarket chains, selected a self-checkout developed, marketed and serviced by NCR Corporation. Known as the Self-Checkout Terminal (SCOT), the system was designed for usability by NCR's Human Factors Engineering organization. NCR is the world leader in self-service technology, and the company's ATMs process 20 billion transactions each year.

"I've tried this system myself, and it's as easy to operate as an ATM," Snyder said. "Shoppers in other cities, from senior citizens to youngsters, have discovered that self-checkout is simple. All you have to do is walk up and start scanning. It has a touch screen and a friendly voice that leads you through your transaction. If you need assistance, it signals one of our front end associates.

Each NCR Self-Checkout features a bi-optic scanner/scale that has the industry's highest first-pass read rate. It also includes self-checkout software, security subsystem, and ATM-type technology that allows shoppers to pay with cash, credit or debit card. They can even use coupons and receive cash back from their transactions.
